Music is in the air this summer at Memorial Park, the Concerts in the Park’s 2012 series kicked off June 13. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, until Aug. 30, the park will host a variety of free music events.
Oshawa Civic Band, “Oshawa’s longest existing musical group” boasts their site, was the first to take the stage. The band established in 1870 will be playing several dates throughout the series. After being introduced by Mayor John Henry they began with a Spanish Concerto. A family seated at the front of the stage was in awe. “Beautiful,” said the mother. “Romantic,” whispered her young daughter. The traditional British-style brass band followed with Scottish Rhapsody.
The theme of the evening was a tribute to the British Isles with a nod to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Oshawa Legion Branch 43 Pipe Band, Oshawa’s official pipe band for over 30 years, also performed.
The series will include opera, children’s music, country, rock, blues and other music styles. “This is something you can enjoy on your own or take the family to. It’s nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy some music,” said Oshawa mother Krista Harris.
