Hungry for healthy choices

February isn’t just about chocolates and cupid, it’s also about raising awareness for Heart Month. With many people on the go, eating a healthy breakfast or lunch can be tough. A bagel with cream cheese is definitely a convenient choice, but downtown Oshawa has many great diners and cafés where the chefs prepare fresh meals every day.
Located in the heart of the city lies the Diamond Grill. Although the diner is known for serving up its most popular breakfast, the Grand Slam, owner Jay Jegatheeswaran says there are many healthier options – it’s up to the customers to make that decision.
“All day we serve fresh fruit and we make our own crepes,” he says. “People choose how they want to eat. We also have low calories meals.”
Beanz, a colourful and quaint cafe located on the west end of downtown, is famous for its homemade soups and using real products as opposed to cold cuts.
“It’s not processed meat,” says owner Richelle Borg. “We use real pieces of turkey breast instead of thin slices of cold cuts that have been sitting in Lord knows what.”
Last year, Beanz received an excellence award from the Eat Smart! program. Borg is confident another recognition is on the way.
